My Media: Creating and Editing Closed Captions

Once you have created videos with the My Media program within eLearn, it is important to provide a Closed Captioning (CC) option to students. It is the responsibility of the faculty members that upload media to order captions and ensure they are 100% accurate.

To get started, you will need to access the "My Media" link through the "Course Tools" menu inside of eLearn.

Step 1: Ordering Mechanical (Automatic) Captions

  1. Open up the video from "My Media."
  2. Click the "Actions" button in the lower right-hand corner.
  3. From the drop-down menu, click "+Order Captions."

  1. Click the "Order Captions" blue button on the next screen.
  2. Click "OK" once the caption request confirmation screen pops up.

The status will show PENDING until the job is finished processing.

Notes:

  • While mechanical captioning may take up to 7 days to process, the standard wait-time is usually less than 1 day.
  • Mechanically-generated captions are generally only 70 to 80 percent accurate. You must edit the captions to ensure 100% accuracy, including punctuation, spelling, and capitalization.
  • Closed captioning should only be requested once per video, as multiple requests will likely yield similar results.

Step 2: Editing Captions

  1. Click on a video that you ordered captions for and would like to edit.
  2. Click on the "Actions" drop-down menu and choose the "+Caption Requests" option.
  3. Under the Status: Complete column, click "Edit."

The captioning editor interface will look similar to the example below.

  1. The video may begin playing automatically. Select "Play Until End of Sentence" so the video will stop after the first sentence, allowing you time to listen and revise the captions as needed for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Adjust the captioning to match the words that are said for that particular sentence.
  2. When finished with a sentence, click the next line on the left or use the keyboard shortcuts that are listed on the right side of the window.
  3. Periodically click the green "Save" button to save all captioning work. It is important to save the edits periodically to ensure progress has been made.
  4. Once finished with all caption edits, click on the green "Approve" button.
  5. In the popup confirmation request, click on the green "Approve" button once again.
