Starting on August 12, 2024 all Vol State employees and students, in an effort protect Vol State information resources, have been required as domain users to change their Vol State passwords every 730 days (two years).
To set your password for the first time or to change your existing password visit the Password Reset Utility.
- Your user name will be available on the same page where you set your new password once you submit your:
- First Name
- Last Name
- V Number
- Birth Date
Passwords must be a minimum of 16 characters, a maximum of 256 characters, and MUST NOT contain ANY part of your name, username, or V number.
Users cannot reuse any of their previous ten passwords.
Passwords must contain characters from at least three of the following four categories:
- English uppercase alphabet characters (A-Z)
- English lowercase alphabet characters (a-z)
- Base 10 digits (0-9)
- Non-alphanumeric characters:
What do I need to do if I am not provided the intended experience through the Password Reset Utility?
- Confirm that the password/passphrase is a minimum of 16 characters.
- Confirm that the password/passphrase is no more than 256 characters.
- Confirm that the password/passphrase DOES NOT contain ANY part of your:
I am still unable to change my password/passphrase through the Password Reset Utility.
When I "Sign in with Microsoft" I am still not able to change my password/passphrase.
- The IT Help Desk at times find that it is necessary to modify the above instructions to assist in updating passwords/passphrases.
- The IT Help Desk suggests that the Non-alphanumeric characters not be used within the passwords/passphrases as one of your chosen categories in these instances.

Tips for when you have your password/passphrase updated.
- Important Note - Passwords/passphrases should never be:
- Shared
- Written down
- E-mailed to others.
- Important Note - Changing your account password will affect, but is not limited to, the following campus systems:
- Computer Login
- Wi-Fi Login
- Microsoft Suite (Desktop and Web)
- Includes but not limited to Outlook and Teams.
- D2L/eLearn
- Degree Works
- Banner
- Important Note - It is your responsibility to safeguard your accounts and passwords!
- Never share your passwords with anyone for any reason.
- NEVER logon to campus computers for someone else!
- Important Note - By periodically changing your account password you can better protect your accounts, files, and other computer resources.
