Content: Creating Modules, Submodules, and Folders

The first step in adding and organizing learning materials is to create a new module in your course. Within a module, you can add pages and module activities. You can also add submodules (second level units) and folders (third level units) as lower level containers for content and activities.

To Create a New Module

  1. From the course navigation bar, click Content.
  2. Click + New Module on the top left of your screen.
  3. From the Add Module page, do the following:
  1. Enter a Title for the module.
  2. If desired, click Add Due Date and enter a Due Date.
  3. If desired, enter a Description for your new module.
  4. If desired, click Availability Dates & Conditions to set a Start Date and End Date and Release Conditions for the new module.
  5. If desired, you can change the color of the module by using the Display accordion. The default module color is Vol State blue or you can choose a custom module color by clicking Custom and using the Select a color panel.
  1. Use the Visibility Toggle at the bottom of the screen to make the module visible or hidden from students on creation.
  2. Click Save.

The new module is added to your course.

Module Best Practices

When creating module titles be sure to:

  • use consistent/similar names throughout the course
  • use consistent formatting of the text

When creating module titles do not:

  • use long titles
  • abbreviate words
  • use all caps

To Create a New Submodule

  1. From the course navigation bar, click Content.
  2. From the table of contents, click a module that you want to add the submodule to.
  3. Click the gray Create New button on the top right of your screen and then click New Submodule.
  4. From the Add Submodule page, do the following:
  1. Enter a Title for the submodule.
  2. If desired, click Add Due Date and enter a Due Date.
  3. If desired, enter a Description for your new submodule.
  4. If desired, click Availability Dates & Conditions to set a Start Date and End Date and Release Conditions for the new submodule.
  1. Use the Visibility Toggle at the bottom of the screen to make the submodule visible or hidden from students on creation.
  2. Click Save.

The new submodule is added to your course. *Please note: A submodule inherits the parent module's display color. You cannot customize the color of a submodule.

To Create a New Folder

  1. From the course navigation bar, click Content.
  2. From the table of contents, click a submodule that you want to add the folder to.
  3. Click the gray Create New button on the top right of your screen and then click New Folder.
  4. From the New Folder page, do the following:
  1. Enter a Title for the folder.
  2. If desired, click Add Due Date and enter a Due Date.
  3. If desired, enter a Description for your new folder.
  4. If desired, click Availability Dates & Conditions to set a Start Date and End Date and Release Conditions for the new folder.
  1. Use the Visibility Toggle at the bottom of the screen to make the folder visible or hidden from students on creation.
  2. Click Save.

The new folder is added to your course. *Please note: A folder inherits the parent module's display color. You cannot customize the color of a folder.
