AI Syllabus Statements Implementation Guide

Purpose

The AI Implementation Guidelines provide college-wide guidance on the ethical, transparent, and pedagogically sound use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic settings. It aligns with the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) policy 1.08.10.00 Use of Artificial Intelligence and supports faculty and students in using AI technologies effectively, responsibly, and in accordance with academic integrity, privacy, and security standards.

Core Principles

  • Academic Integrity: Student work must reflect original thinking unless otherwise specified. Misrepresentation of AI-generated content as one’s own is a violation of academic integrity and is subject to institutional and TBR disciplinary action.
  • Transparency: Students and faculty must disclose when and how AI tools are used in academic work, and faculty must communicate clear guidelines regarding AI use in their course syllabi using one of the three options outlined below.
  • Disciplinary Flexibility: Faculty retain autonomy to set course-specific AI guidelines in accordance with academic freedom and responsibility policies (TBR Policy 5.02.03.30; Vol State Policy II:01:06).

Faculty Instructions

Every course must include a syllabus statement outlining how students may use generative artificial intelligence (AI) in their coursework.

It’s important to have a conversation with students regarding how you expect them to use (or not use) AI tools in your course. Discuss with students they will still need to have a skill set to be successful in the work place. AI should be a tool and students should not be dependent on AI for completing projects.

The level of AI use permitted should be detailed to ensure students clearly understand acceptable use and the consequences of not following course policies. Faculty may choose the Red, Yellow, or Green level of AI use that is acceptable for each course and include specific guidelines in the course syllabus.

These additional articles have been created to provide specific language to use, helpful examples, and training.

  4. Assignments students may NOT use AI for are also named
  5. Rules fit the Learning Outcomes of the assignment or course goals
  6. The statement explains how students should document AI use
  7. AI Tool examples are given so students know what counts as AI

  9. The policy states what will happen if AI is prohibited and concerns arise (i.e., oral check-in)
  10. The policy states the consequences to the student if AI policy is not followed
  11. The tone supports learning – not fear
